Walking Water Experiment

During our Science unit on water, we have had the chance to conduct several experiments.  The walking water experiment taught us about absorption and the mixing of colours.

Fire Safety

We had several fire fighters visit us last week to talk about fire safety in our homes.  They explained how to create a safe evacuation plan for if our homes ever catch on fire.  They demonstrated how they will enter a home and showed us all the gadgets they use on and around the truck when putting out fires.  It was an exciting demonstration and it left us thinking about how we can make sure our families can stay safe in the event of a fire.

Creek Study Field Trip

We took a trip to our local Mark Creek and explored the various invertebrates making it their home.  We were able to identify a variety of invertebrates just from their look (i.e. how many legs they had, their antennae, body size, shape, and colour).  We recorded our findings and within the next month we will be exploring these invertebrates further during our Macro Invertebrate program when we get to build a bug.

Water Cleaning Experiment

Using recycled water bottles, we made water filtration systems.  We cut the water bottle in half and turned the top upside down so the narrow end was entering the bottom half of the water bottle.  Then we layered a coffee filter, active carbon, sand, and gravel.  We poured our dirty puddle water we collected through our filter to see how clean/clear we could get our water.  Just like every experiment, some worked well and some did not.  We learned from our mistakes and were able to make a new filter that worked even better!
